Emerald is a variety of the mineral Beryl (the same mineral as aquamarine) and the green colour is due to the presence of chromium and vanadium. Emerald tends to have many inclusions and when used as gems for jewellery, stones may be oiled to fill and disguise cracks and hide flaws. It is one of the four most ‘precious’ gemstones along with Diamond, Ruby & Sapphire.
Emerald is associated with the heart chakra. It opens the heart to love, forgiveness, compassion and trust. It promotes friendship, balance in relationships, contentment and loyalty. Emerald can also be used for reviving passion, whether it be with a person or for something in your life.
Emerald is also associated with the eyes and sight. In a physical way it is said that an eye bath of emerald water is soothing and can help with eye infections. Spiritually, emerald can help with vision and intuition, bringing to the conscious mind what is unconsciously known. It also increases focus, activates psychic abilities and can help with clairvoyance.
Emerald can help with self-esteem. It can bring focus and intensity to one’s desires by helping to move forward on your path from the heart. Emerald is also soothing emotionally and mentally.
Emerald is said to be a strong healer of the physical heart, blood and circulatory system. It may also help in treating the lungs, liver, gall bladder, pancreas and kidneys. It is said to aid recovery after an infectious illness and can be used to ward off epilepsy and allergies. It may also help to relieve eczema and skin irritations.
