Emerald is a variety of the mineral Beryl (the same mineral as aquamarine) and the green colour is due to the presence of chromium and vanadium. Emerald tends to have many inclusions and when used as gems for jewellery, stones may be oiled to fill and disguise cracks and hide flaws.
